What is the recovery time for liposuction?

When it comes to getting rid of excess body fat, liposuction is certainly the top choice.  Liposuction is a safe and effective way to contour and shape the body, and it can provide great results for the right candidate.  One of the most common questions patients ask about the procedure is – What is the recovery time for liposuction?

Liposuction techniques

Liposuction is a procedure that removes unwanted fat from specific areas of the body.  With traditional liposuction this is accomplished with the assistance of a cannula (tiny thin tube), which is used to break up the fat deposits beneath the skin.  The fat is then extracted by a suction attached to the cannula.   The cannula is inserted through small incisions made in the treatment areas.

There is also laser assisted liposuction or laser lipo, in which laser or ultrasound technology is used to liquefy the unwanted fat.  The fat is then gently removed with suction (learn more).

What is the recovery time for liposuction?

Recovery after liposuction varies, as it depends on the type of liposuction performed, and the extent of the procedure.

Traditional liposuction is very invasive, so recovery can take up to 2 weeks, but recovery after laser lipo takes about 1-2 days in most cases.   However, strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.  Patients are advised to consult with their plastic surgeon before resuming their exercise routine.
